Gustav Klimt (Austrian, 1862–1918)
Oil on canvas depicting a richly ornamented female figure identified with Hygieia, the mythological goddess of health, shown frontally with a serpent winding prominently across the composition. The figure is rendered in deep red, black, and muted flesh tones, highlighted with extensive gold-colored decorative motifs and geometric patterning characteristic of Klimt’s celebrated ornamental style.
Signed “Gustav Klimt” lower left. Framed.
The verso bears several labels, stamps, and inscriptions, including a label referring to Gustav Klimt, a Lefevre Gallery, London label, a “Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza” stamp, “Certification” markings, and additional collection-style stamps. These markings are noted as present on the work and are not independently authenticated.
Gustav Klimt was an Austrian Symbolist painter and a leading figure of the Vienna Secession. His work is renowned for its combination of figurative painting, elaborate ornament, symbolic imagery, and extensive use of gold and decorative pattern, particularly during his celebrated Golden Phase.
