Description
with Tools. Constant Permeke (Belgian, 1886–1952)
Ink and wash on paper depicting a bent male laborer grasping long-handled tools, rendered with bold black contours, broad gray washes, and simplified monumental forms. The figure’s heavy limbs, stooped posture, and powerful physical presence convey the dignity and hardship of manual labor, themes closely associated with Permeke’s expressionist depictions of workers, fishermen, and rural life.
Signed “Permeke” lower right.
Constant Permeke was a leading Belgian Expressionist known for his forceful portrayals of peasants, fishermen, and working people. His art is characterized by robust figures, strong simplified forms, earthy tonalities, and a deeply human emphasis on physical labor, endurance, and the relationship between people and the land.
