Description
American Profile, 1940. Maynard Dixon (American, 1875–1946)
Evocative profile portrait of a Native American figure, rendered with remarkable economy and strength of line. The sitter is presented in strict profile against an open, unmodulated ground, allowing the sharply defined facial structure, long dark hair, and contemplative expression to dominate the composition.
Executed in a combination of charcoal, graphite, and colored pastel or chalk on paper, the work uses deep black passages for the hair contrasted with warm earth-toned modeling across the face and neck. Subtle transitions of ochre, sienna, brown, and cream create sculptural dimension, while the restrained palette lends the portrait a quiet monumentality and psychological presence.
Bearing the initials “M.D.” and dated “1940” in red at the lower portion of the composition. The date places the work stylistically within the mature period associated with Dixon’s enduring fascination with the people, landscapes, and visual character of the American West.
The reverse appears largely blank, showing scattered age-related toning, foxing, handling marks, and minor surface discoloration consistent with an older work on paper. No additional inscriptions or labels are visible on the verso in the photographs provided.
A compelling and intimate Western portrait distinguished by its strong silhouette, refined draftsmanship, and restrained use of color—a visually powerful image that would present exceptionally well within a collection of American Western or Southwestern art.
