Abstract oil painting Set table (based on...

paintings by Olga Rozanova) Victor Konotopsky. ?1708

"Set Table" by the renowned Ukrainian artist Viktor Konotopsky, inspired by the avant-garde legacy of Olga Rozanova, transforms a simple dining scene into a dynamic interplay of geometry, color, and energy. At the center of the composition, a plate of bright red crayfish commands attention on a table broken into rhythmic fragments. A bottle, glass, and napkin emerge from shifting planes, while Cyrillic letters spell out “???????” (tavern), evoking the setting of a casual, familiar feast. The artist’s use of spiraling motion and intersecting diagonals reflects Rozanova’s passion for Futurist movement and Cubist dissection. Konotopsky plays with perspective and abstraction, deliberately distorting the realism of objects to convey the vitality of shared moments. The vivid reds and cool blues clash and harmonize, enhancing the expressive potential of the everyday. Through this work, the artist celebrates the act of gathering, eating, and living — not through stillness, but through motion and fragmentation, suggesting that memory, taste, and joy are never static but always in flux.
