Description
The 1817 15 Stars Coronet Head Large Cent is a highly popular and unique United States copper coin variety created due to a die-engraving spacing error at the Philadelphia Mint. While standard U.S. coins featured 13 stars to represent the original colonies, the engraver mistakenly spaced the stars too closely together on a single obverse die (classified by numismatists as the N-16 variety). To correct the uneven visual gap, two extra stars were added, bringing the total to 15.
