Christopher Pratt CC ONL RCA (1935–2022) was one of Canada’s most respected painters and printmakers. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Pratt studied at Mount Allison University and the Glasgow School of Art before establishing his career in Newfoundland. Working in painting, drawing, lithography and serigraphy, Pratt developed a celebrated style marked by meticulous detail, quiet composition and a strong sense of place. His work is held in major public collections across Canada, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario and The Rooms. In 1980, Pratt also designed the provincial flag of Newfoundland and Labrador. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1973 and Companion in 1983.
