Description

18th -19th Century Folding Hand Fan,
Crafted with intricate structural and decorative elements
Key Characteristics
Folding fan.Leaf (Mount):
The pleated upper section is made of a light-colored fabric or vellum. It is accented with delicate floral motifs and a border that shows typical signs of aging.
Sticks & Guards:
The underlying supportive frame (sticks) and the sturdier outer protective pieces (guards) appear to be made of carved bone or ivory, showcasing detailed openwork pierced detailing near the base.
Rivet & Tassel:
The bottom pivot point secures the sticks together, accompanied by an attached loop and a weathered fabric handle strap or tassel for carrying
Observed Visual Damage
Structural Breaches: There is noticeable damage to the upper leaf (mount), specifically in the central area above the sticks, where parts of the material have torn or broken away completely.
Separation: The delicate leaf material is pulling away and detaching from the underlying support sticks at multiple crease points.
Staining and Discoloration: The light fabric or vellum has darkened significantly over time, showing uneven yellowing, gray spotting, and water-like staining consistent with historical environmental exposure.
Fraying: The attachment loop and lower hanging fabric strap are heavily frayed, structurally weak, and worn thin.
Measurements: Length 8.5" closed
