Description
SERIAL NUMBER: 32717. BARREL: 18". CALIBER: 8MM LEBEL. MANUFACTURED: circa 1917. The Berthier Model 1916 (Mle M-16) manufactured by Continsouza is a rugged, compact French military firearm characterized by its historical adaptation from peacetime industry to wartime production. Originally a film equipment and phonograph factory, Continsouza shifted its operations during World War I to produce these firearms, which are distinguished by the sharp, stamped text Étts Continsouza MLE-M-16 along the left side of the receiver. Visually, the weapon stands out due to its extended steel magazine box that protrudes significantly beneath the straight-wrist walnut stock, a design upgrade implemented to accommodate a five-round en-bloc clip rather than the inadequate three-round capacity of its predecessors. This robust carbine or rifle is further defined by a protective wooden upper handguard covering the barrel, deep finger grooves along the forend, an angled bolt handle that folds tightly against the frame, and frequently, a distinct N stamped near the breech to signify a 1930s modification for updated French infantry ammunition.
CONDITION: Good. The bore is lightly frosted, shiny with crisp rifling. The rifle exhibits considerable age and use. The wood components show noticeable wear, dings, and scratches. The metal components display finish loss, patination, and minor surface pitting consistent with its age and history. C&R 27-57
