Description

Skull Portrait on Wood. John Wayne Gacy (American, 1942–1994)

Mixed media on wood depicting a stylized skull-like clown portrait set against a deep black ground. The figure wears a bright red cap and blue ruffled collar, while the face is reduced to bold skeletal features outlined in black and brown. The stark contrast between the vivid costume elements and the macabre central image gives the work a dark, theatrical quality associated with Gacy-related outsider and prison art imagery.

Signed “J.W. GACY” lower left. Framed.

John Wayne Gacy became known for producing drawings and paintings during his incarceration, many featuring clown imagery, self-referential figures, and darkly theatrical subjects. Works associated with his name are often collected within the broader category of prison art and outsider art, where biography and imagery play a central role in their appeal.
