Description

Ismail Gulgee (Pakistani, 1926-2007)

An expressive drawing on paper featuring sweeping, rhythmic calligraphic gestures in deep black ink against a neutral ground. The composition embodies the artist's "Action Painting" approach, utilizing fluid, sweeping lines to create a sense of spiritual and physical motion. Signed "Gulgee" in the lower right. Framed.

Ismail Gulgee was a world-renowned Pakistani artist who fused the tradition of Islamic calligraphy with the energy of Western Abstract Expressionism. Originally a gifted portraitist for global royalty and heads of state, he transitioned in the 1960s to a grand, gestural abstract style that earned him international acclaim. His work is characterized by its vibrant energy, complex layering, and a deep, inherent sense of movement.
