Description

This decorative circular wall plaque is a reproduction of the Aztec Sun Stone, also known as the Piedra del Sol. The piece is cast in a molded composition material with a light cream-coloured finish and dark recessed detailing to simulate aged stone or bone. The central medallion depicts the sun god Tonatiuh with a protruding flint knife tongue, surrounded by four square panels representing the previous mythological cosmic eras. A concentric ring displays the twenty day signs of the Aztec ritual calendar, framed by stylized solar rays and cosmological symbols. Two celestial fire serpents, or Xiuhcoatl, encircle the outer border, meeting at the base of the design. The reverse is flat with a small circular hanging aperture at the top edge. A printed retail label on the back identifies the item as a large calendar, with pricing listed in both US Dollars and Mexican Pesos. Condition: The plaque is in good overall condition with no visible chips or cracks. There are minor surface marks and remnants of a secondary adhesive label on the reverse.
