Description

The Eleventh Street Opera House was a historic Philadelphia theater located on 11th Street just south of Market Street near Ludlow Street, the building originally opened on December 4, 1854, as a house of worship-turned-lyceum called Cartee's Lyceum before being converted into a performance venue, despite the Opera House" title—a common 19th-century term for variety and entertainment halls—the venue did not actually host grand opera, Instead, it spent roughly 50 years as Philadelphia's primary home for popular blackface minstrel and vaudeville shows, the building was torn down in 1911
